James Asaph Granberry, son of Simeon Sebastian Granberry and Elizabeth Baxter Granberry, was born on April 29, 1857 in Clinton, Mississippi. After the War Between the States, Mississippi established a home for the orphan children of the state at Lauderdale Springs, Mississippi and elected his father, S. S. Granberry, as Superintendent of that home. After serving in this capacity for several years, S. S. Granberry died and his widow moved with her family of three small sons and one daughter to a farm near Meridian where James helped with things about the farm and on moonlight nights hunted coons and possums with Uncle Joe, a faithful and dependable old negro servant. About the age of 17 James was sent to Mississippi College where, in four years, he won his M. A. degree with honors.
First year out of college, he spent a most interesting nine months in Biloxi as principal of the school there - later going to Rose Hill, Mississippi to teach in a big boarding school as assistant principal. (In those days the boarding school with coeds were very much in use.) After a few years in Rose Hill, he was induced to come to Yantley as principal of another coed boarding school where he spent seven years, met Elizabeth Phillips, fell in love on first sight, and married the following 29th of March.
His favorite sport was fox hunting. Many evenings he would mount his sorrel, Bob, and join the hunt for a chase of several hours.
