Mary Phillips grew up in Lake City, Florida where she graduated from Columbia High School. She went on to attend Florida State College for Women (now Florida State University) where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. While there she was in the Chi Omega Sorority where she served as Vice President.
