Obituary written by daughter, Agnes Chalker Granberry
Elizabeth Jane Phillips Granberry was born in Yantley, Alabama, November 9, 1861 -- the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Griffin Phillips, a family name old in pioneer annals of the south, a family whose descendents have been distinguished in professional, educational, and religious fields.
Mrs. Granberry's broad interests and deep compassion for all mankind were engendered, no doubt, by the varied backgrounds she knew - - the Old South in its most gracious day; the West in its picturesque times; lastly Florida, in its newer years. In all places to which life drew her, she was blessed by the countless friends, lowly and great, who came under the influence of her courageous, indomitable, and all-pitying nature.
Her husband, the late James Asaph Granberry, was a graduate of Mississippi College, of which distinguished old institution his father was president during the War Between the States. Dr. Granberry was well-known in educational and cultural circles in Mississippi, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Florida, at one time serving as Dean of Columbia College in Lake City, Florida, and on the faculty of the Florida State College for Women in Tallahassee.
Mrs. Granberry herself was a graduate of the East Alabama Seminary in which she taught several years after graduation. She was a resident of Jacksonville, intermittently, for 18 years.
A consistent member of the Baptist Church in childhood, she was at one time an active worker in the Main Street Church of Jacksonville and, at the time of her death, a member of the Riverside Baptist Church. During the rich years of her life she served with tireless energy and devotion in practically every capacity in which a loyal church woman can serve. She was a member of various secular groups, being active for many years in Parent Teacher, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and Women's Club organizations. Utter unselfishness was the keynote to her character; service to her family and to her friends, the lodestar of her life. Family and friends often remarked that to an amazing degree she lived in thought and spirit, in the present and in the future. She passed away at 11:45 the morning of March 1 at the age of 81 years, 3 months, and 19 days.
She is survived by two sons, James Asaph Granberry, Jr. of Jacksonville and Edwin Phillips Granberry of Winter Park; two daughters, Hallie Elizabeth Granberry of Jacksonville and Mrs. Selwyn Chalker of Lake City; two sisters, Mrs. D. W. Brock of Yantley, Alabama and Mrs. L. A. Brock of Cuba, Alabama; several grandchildren including Selwyn Chalker, Jr. of Hinesville, Georgia, Mrs. William S. Royall, Jr. and Mrs. Howard Newkirk of Jacksonville. Other grandchildren are Hallijeanne and Randolph Chalker of Lake City and Edwin, Jr., Julian, and Hal Granberry of Winter Park, Florida
