Elizabeth Granberry, wife of Simeon Sebastian Granberry raised Delia from infancy. Historical documents state that Elizabeth Granberry "gave her a mother's care and protection, taught her all kinds of housework, instructed her in her books, and better than all, both by precept and example, led her to the way of the only true life. She repaid her benefactress by a loving service faithlful to the end. She will be recompensed, for Christ never suffers a kindness to one of His followers to go unrequited."
Delia is listed as a 14 year old black girl as part of the household in the 1870 census. Delia stayed with the family until she died, helping to raise all of the children in their household and later in the household of James Asaph Granberry (listed in the 1910 census).
Delia was born in 1851 in Clinton, Mississippi. She died 1926 in Miami, Florida

Notes about Delia written by Elizabeth Granberry (wife of James Asaph Granberry, Sr.):
According to "Mother Granberry" (wife of S. S. Granberry), when Delia was a small child she was playing in the yard and ran into a pile of smoldering leaves burning in the yard. Her feet were damaged. Mother Granberry was very sensitive about Dee's feet and brought her up to be the same way. We knew better than to ask any questions. We never saw her feet until she was sick the last time. She had lost the toes on one foot and the other foot entirely. All of Dee's dresses were made with full skirts with ruffles on the bottom to hide her feet.
